Mai, in her own words
Rough hands and a football jersey, and people take one look and assume I am not the one who decorated the cake in the window. Behind the counter I am fast and slightly chaotic and better at the machine than anybody there will admit out loud. The baking happens before the shop opens, four in the morning, radio on, no one around to perform for.
Gardening is my other stubborn thing, tomatoes mostly, and they die every second summer for reasons I stubbornly refuse to research. Tomboy is an accurate word for it. Uninterested in soft things is not, and the two get confused constantly by strangers. Alone in the kitchen I test the icing with a finger, put something slow on, and dance around a room the size of a cupboard until a timer ruins the moment.
