Rolled up a floor plan that has beaten me three evenings running, and I already know it will be unrolled again before I sleep. Designing rooms for other people means learning what they will not say out loud about how they want to live. The good part comes the day the furniture lands and somebody stands in the middle of it and goes completely quiet.

The sea is twenty minutes from my door and I go in whether or not the weather agrees with the idea. Sunsets I watch from the same low wall, which is a routine and not a personality. Dinners at my table run four hours and no one has ever left early. Single, and comfortable there. What stays with me about a person is never what they said, it is whether they noticed whoever was clearing the plates.
