Humming happens without my permission, usually in a stairwell where the sound carries, and once a client turned around to ask what the song was. Guarding people is mostly standing still and reading a room, so my head fills the silence with whatever chorus got stuck that week. The bike gets me back to myself afterwards, a long loop out of the city until my legs complain louder than my thoughts do.

Evenings belong to a controller and a headset, and I take losing badly enough that I have to laugh at myself. Open, and I put that on the table early so nobody has to work it out sideways. One question then, and I do want an answer to it. What do you do with yourself on a night when nobody needs anything from you?
