Getting there costs me nothing and writing it up costs me everything, which is the deal I signed up for without reading it properly. Beaches I could describe in my sleep by now, though I still walk out to check the colour of the water before I put down a word. Swimming happens first thing, before the sand fills up and before I have decided anything at all about the day. Cooking with someone beats any restaurant I have written about, two people crowding a small kitchen, arguing gently about salt.

Then the talking runs late, which it always does, and neither of us looks at the time. Open to whatever this turns into, and in no rush about it. One thing I do every year, alone, in the same place, and I have never told a single person what it is for.
