Pulled a tray of bread out ten minutes ago and the whole flat smells like the good version of my week. Research fills the days, long stretches of nothing happening followed by an afternoon where everything does, and patience about which one I get was slow to arrive. Baking is the opposite bargain, three hours and a definite result, even when the result is flat.

The balcony is more garden than balcony now, tomatoes leaning where they should not and a chilli plant I keep apologising to. Karaoke happens when somebody drags me and then cannot get the microphone back. Open to what turns up rather than hunting it. Years later I remember who checked whether I had eaten, and I have tried to be that person ever since without making a speech about it.
