Two blocks from my station there is a wall somebody repaints every few weeks, and this morning it had turned a flat blue. Uniform makes people look through you, so I have got very good at seeing the things nobody thinks are being watched. Off shift the camera comes out and most of what I keep is other people's ordinary evenings, nothing posed.

Clear nights I drive out past the last streetlight and lie on the car roof until the cold wins. Cooking is the other cure, too much garlic, no recipe, whoever is around gets fed. Flirting is a reflex and I would rather admit it than pretend to be mysterious about it. When I leave I never do the long drawn out version. One line, a look held a second past comfortable, and I am gone.
