An ink stone sits by my left hand with the water gone cloudy, because I started one character three hours ago and still have not got the last stroke right. Moving around for a living means my whole life fits in one bag, and the brushes always make the cut. Calligraphy is the anchor, the single thing that looks the same in every room I wake up in.

The figures travel too, wrapped in socks, which everybody finds funnier than I do. Games fill the long transfers and the nights in towns where nothing is open after eight. Something back home is unresolved, and I stay cheerful about most of it, honestly. On my own in a strange room I talk to myself in two languages and answer in the wrong one, every time.
