Faces I hold onto and names I lose, thirty of them every September, and the class has come to expect the apology routine I built out of it. Teaching uses more words than I actually own, so by evening there is very little conversation left in me. The bike takes care of that, an hour out along the river where nothing has to be explained to anybody.

At home there are figures on a shelf, arranged in an order I would rather not justify to visitors. Games run later than they should and I have made my peace with the consequences. Quiet gets read as cold and I stopped correcting it, because the people worth knowing work it out on their own. I relax around anyone who can let a silence run its full course without deciding something has gone wrong.
