Names go straight through me and I have introduced myself twice to the same person on the same shift more than once. Nursing suits me anyway, because faces stay, charts stay, and I always know exactly who is frightened of the needle. Days off go to the coast, or a flight somewhere I have not been yet, booked with almost no planning and even less packing.

Cooking with somebody at midnight after a long week on the ward is my entire idea of luxury. There is somebody at home, which I mention straight away so that it never turns into an awkward discovery. Goodbyes are where I am useless. I say one thing too many, then stand in the doorway saying most of it again, and I have stopped expecting to grow out of it.
