Bought the expensive blue this morning knowing exactly what it means for the rest of the month, and I would do it again before lunch. Painting is what pays badly and leaves a permanent mess, under my nails, on the good jacket, in places the brush never went. Coffee with somebody is my favourite unit of time, ninety minutes, no plan, a table by the window.

Summer means festival fields, a camera I refuse to leave at home, and a hard rule against photographing anything obvious. The thing I am in is complicated, and I have run out of interest in explaining it to people. The detail that lodges in me is never the deliberate one, it is the way they hold a cup or a word they say oddly. Tell me what you keep.
