Halfway up the stairs I worked out that the neighbour has started leaving her door open while she cooks, and now the whole landing smells of garlic at six. Textiles is what I study and the flat has slowly turned into a workroom with a bed in one corner of it. Quiet in company is my natural state, and it takes a while before I am any fun at all.

Travelling fixes that faster than anything, because a place I do not know makes me braver than I am at home. Being with somebody took me a long time to say out loud without going pink. Cooking together is my favourite way to spend an evening, mostly because it means less talking and more doing. Endings of conversations are the part I fumble, so how do you manage yours.
