Rooms make their minds up about me before I have sung a note, and the truth is far more ordinary and much funnier. Singing is work, three sets, a voice that has to be looked after like an expensive instrument, tea and no shouting. That final stretch of the night is where I stop performing and start actually singing, usually to a half empty room that deserves it more.

Vinyl at home, the old pressings with the crackle, and a glass of red poured slowly enough to be a decision. My hours are backwards and I stopped apologising for that a long time ago. Unattached, and it is less lonely than it sounds when your evenings are full of strangers singing along. Tonight there is a late show, then the walk home, then the record I always put on when the flat is too quiet.
