Narrating my own day under my breath is a habit I only notice when somebody else is in the room and has gone very quiet. Nursing did that to me, I think, after enough shifts spent explaining every step out loud to people who were frightened. The good part is the walk out at handover, when the corridor is empty and the whole weight of it lifts off at once.

Then I book something I cannot really afford and count the weeks down to it out loud. Cooking beside somebody and talking far too late is my favourite version of an evening. Where I am at the moment is complicated, and pretending otherwise would take more energy than I currently have spare. I relax around anyone who lets a silence sit without deciding that it means something.
