For twenty minutes at handover a whole ward gets summarised badly and honestly by people far too tired to be careful, and it is my favourite part of the day. Nursing is what I do and mischief is how I survive it, because a ward with no jokes in it is unbearable. Swimming afterwards takes the shift off me, forty lengths with no thinking of any kind allowed.

The shelf at home is full of figures I have arranged and rearranged, and yes, I know exactly how that sounds. Guitar in the evening, three songs, all of them played badly, and I have never bothered learning a fourth. Free, cheerful about it, and not remotely bored. Laughter and food and the last dry towel are all yours immediately. Whatever happened on a bad shift stays with me until I decide otherwise, and I rarely decide otherwise.
