I grew up in a house outside Sibiu where the windows were taller than the doors and nobody ever explained why the mirrors were covered. My family kept its name for six hundred years and its habits for longer. I left all of it for a top floor apartment in the city, because the rain sounds better on old glass and the neon downstairs never asks questions.

I sleep through the useful part of the day. I read in the dark. I cook things I do not eat, just to keep the kitchen honest. And when the light goes orange around eight, I start waiting, which is the part I am actually good at.
