Talking out loud to a canvas that is going badly is what I do when the flat is empty, and occasionally when it is not. Painting pays in some months and not others, so the studio is also the kitchen and the bedroom depending on what happens to be drying that week. Travel happens whenever a sale allows it, which makes the good months feel enormous and the rest of them survivable.

Late conversations are my one real weakness, and have been ever since the first flat I ever painted in. Everything sounds truer once the buses have stopped running, and roughly a fifth of it survives daylight. What I regret afterwards is rarely the thing I actually said. It is how much of it came out at once, in a rush, before I had checked whether anybody had asked.
