Polishing a glass that is already clean is what my hands do when the bar goes quiet, and I have been caught at it more than once. Kendo keeps the same trick honest, one movement repeated until it stops being a decision and becomes something my shoulders simply know. Between shifts there is paint under my nails or a camera on the counter, usually both, and the photographs are mostly of empty rooms before anybody arrives.

Regulars tell me things at closing they would never say at eight, so I hold those quietly and pass no comment on them. There is somebody I am still tangled up with, and the short version stays short. What I cannot sit with is cruelty dressed up as honesty. Say the hard thing kindly or keep it in your pocket, there is no third option on my side of the bar.
