I keep promises made in uniform and break most of the ones made in my own clothes. On shift I am early, gloved, and exactly where I said I would be, and then the badge comes off and I lose forty minutes to nothing at all. Swimming is the reset, twenty lengths with no thinking in them, and baking is what happens when I am too wound up to sleep after a long run of nights.

There is usually a loaf cooling on the rack that nobody asked for. At home I sing properly rather than politely, and the neighbours have confirmed through the wall that they hear every word of it. That is a side of me nobody on the ward would recognise, and I am in no hurry at all to introduce them. Calm is a skill I learned, not a temperament.
