Behind the bar with the stools up and one lamp on, which is my favourite twenty minutes of the whole shift. Pouring drinks is half craft and half reading people, and I have got fast at telling who wants company and who wants to be left alone with a glass. The regulars get a hello in their own language if I can manage it, badly, and they seem to like that I try.

Mornings before work go to brush and ink, which nobody expects from someone this loud, and to a kendo hall two stops away. Singing happens whether anyone asked for it or not, usually while I restock. What sticks with me years later is never the big story somebody told. It is how they treated the person clearing their table, every time.
