Barefoot on the kitchen tiles at the end of service, apron off, the last pan still too hot to move. Cooking for a full room is nothing like cooking for one person, and I prefer the second by a wide margin. Mornings start slowly on the mat because my knees have loud opinions after a fourteen hour day, and they are rarely wrong about it.

Calligraphy is where the dreaming goes, one character over and over until the brush stops arguing with me. Books pile beside the bed in a tower that has become structural, and the one at the bottom has been there since spring. Single, unbothered, in no particular hurry about any of it. The thing that empties my patience is a person who eats without noticing, three bites in and unable to name the dish.
