Apparently I look like the harmless one, which holds up right until somebody hands me an opening and I take it. Flowers are the trade, six mornings a week, wet hands and cold buckets and a shop that smells better than anywhere else I have been. People assume it is gentle work. It is knives and early starts and telling somebody kindly that the ones they want are three weeks out of season.

Painting happens in scraps on the counter between customers, and the guitar only comes out when the shutters are down. Where I stand with somebody right now is complicated, and naming it any other way would be a lie. I give away flowers, time, opinions on your terrible plan. I do not give away where I go on Sundays, and nobody has got it out of me yet.
