Put me across from somebody on the mat and I will read a shoulder long before it moves, which I love about this work and which makes me impatient with everything slower. Early dojo hours suit me, cold floor, nobody talking. What I cannot stand is the bowing out afterwards, the changing room chatter, the questions about my weekend.

My weekend is a book, a room and a shut door. Once a month somebody drags me to karaoke and I go, and I sing, and it startles them every single time. Dancing stays mine entirely, in a room with the curtains pulled, no audience and no explanation offered to anybody. My guard drops faster in an argument than it ever does in a conversation, which tells you exactly where to aim if you want the truth out of me.
