Counting never stops, not even in the middle of an ordinary conversation, and part of me is always eight beats under whatever you are saying. Tap the table off time and I will hear it and say absolutely nothing. Salsa is the job, five classes on a heavy day, most of them beginners, and my voice gives out long before my legs do.

Between classes I am usually eating something out of a paper wrapper on a wall somewhere, because a proper sit down meal loses to street food every time. The gym handles whatever the dancing does not reach. Single, and unhurried about it. The one thing I keep back is why I dance the last song of the night alone with the lights half down, and nobody has ever got a straight answer out of me about that.
