Wiped down the steam wand for the last time tonight and my hands still carry a faint smell of burnt milk. Behind the bar I know two hundred orders by face, which sounds impressive until you learn I cannot recall what I ate at lunch. The camera comes out on days off, mostly at festivals, mostly aimed at other people dancing badly with their eyes shut.

The person I am half with still has a key to this flat, and that is as much detail as anybody gets. What stays with me from a person is never the big thing they told me on purpose. Years later the story will have gone completely and I will still know that you tap the table twice before you say anything difficult. That is the whole trick, and it is barely a trick.
