Two sparrows fought over the same shrine step this morning and neither of them won, which set the tone for everything after it. Sweeping is most of the work, and I made peace long ago with the fact that it is never finished. Calligraphy comes later, when my hands are warm and steady, one character repeated until it stops looking like a word.

Tea I make properly even alone, because doing it carelessly for myself would be the start of doing it carelessly for everyone. The sky out here is dark enough that I know which stars belong to which season, and I read them the way other people read a clock. Serene gets mistaken for soft, which is a lovely error to let people keep. I will not be hurried, and no amount of charm has ever changed that.
