Though nothing unkind has ever come out of my mouth in a first conversation, people walk away calling me cold, and I gave that argument up years ago. My work rewards staying quiet and watching, so the habit follows me home and sits down with me. Tomatoes on the balcony are the counterweight, small and demanding and honest about what they need.

Deep into the night it is either a game I have already finished twice or the sky, depending on the cloud. Gardening was meant to be a temporary experiment and now the entire balcony has been surrendered to it. Open is how I describe things, and there is no longer answer prepared behind that. The annoying part is that I answer a question with a question, almost always, and I know precisely when I am doing it. Consider that a warning rather than an apology.
