The lift mirror on the fourth floor has a crack in the corner and today I caught three separate men checking their hair in it. Running an office means I know exactly who is late, who is lying about the traffic, and who brings the good pastries. None of that ever leaves my desk, which is why they all keep telling me things.

Books pile up beside my bed faster than I can get through them, and I sing badly in the car with the windows up. My camera comes out for the small ugly details nobody photographs, drainpipes, the backs of buildings. There is a man who still calls at odd hours and I have never told him to stop, which is as much as anybody gets from me. Also I will not start a book on a Friday, and no, I cannot defend it.
