Every batter I make loses a spoonful before it reaches the tin, and none of the people I feed have ever been told about it. Cooking for strangers turns out to be far easier than talking to them, which is probably why the kitchen fitted me from the very first week. Kendo was somebody else's idea and became the only room where I stop apologising for taking up space.

Swimming does the same job on a slower setting, and I need both of them more than I would ever say to a person's face. Tonight there is dough resting in the fridge that will decide my morning for me, and a chair by the window with a book I have been failing to finish since spring. Nothing more ambitious than that, unless somebody gives me a decent reason.
