Every few weeks I decide to drop to part time, and every few weeks the ward talks me out of it without saying a word. Nursing takes the best hours of my life and hands back something I cannot really explain to people who only ask what I do for a living. After a run of nights I buy something I do not need, which is not a defence, only the truth.

Summer means a festival, mud, and my camera in a plastic bag, four hundred photographs taken in order to keep six of them. Somebody has me and I have him, and saying it plainly seems better than being coy for the sake of mystery. My locker holds a folded ticket stub that has been there for years, and I would not work a shift without it.
