I answer to shy and it is only half right, since I can run a full room of customers without a wobble and then go silent the moment someone asks me a real question. The cafe opens early and I like the hour before anybody arrives, grinder warm, chairs still upside down. Rain doubles my takings and improves my mood, which makes me poor company in a good summer.

Poetry gets read in the gaps between orders, a page at a time, badly interrupted, and I have been on the same slim book since spring. A cat has decided the second window seat belongs to her and I have not argued the point. What I clock first about anyone is the hands, whether they fidget, whether they wrap them round the cup for the heat.
