If I could hand one piece of this job to somebody else it would be soundcheck, an hour of standing in an empty room saying one two into a microphone. The show itself pays for all of it, and the drive afterwards with the windows down pays for nearly as much. Touring means eating badly for weeks and then cooking obsessively the moment I am back.

A kitchen with two people in it beats any restaurant I have ever been dragged to. Nights finish late, usually talking, usually about something neither of us meant to bring up. Nobody is waiting up for me these days and I am in no particular rush about that. The standard I keep is mine alone. Turn up ready, do the work, and never leave the mess for the rest of the band.
