Half the hydrant paint on my street has faded to pink and I only registered it today, after two years of walking past the same corner. That is the job talking, and it talks more or less constantly now. You start seeing exits and blocked stairwells everywhere you go and it does not switch off when the uniform does.

Guitar is what my hands do at the station between calls, quietly, mostly the same four bars that have refused to improve in years and will get played again tonight. Cooking for a crew that eats standing up taught me to make food which survives being abandoned halfway through a meal. I have no patience for anyone who dresses a simple problem in clever language. Say the thing plainly. Then we can all get on with the evening.
