Editing four hundred photographs down to nine is the half of this job I love and the half that ruins my sleep. Writing about places is fine, but the picture is what decides whether anyone reads a single word of it. Festivals are my research excuse, three days of noise and terrible food and the best frames I get all year.

Between trips I shop with no intention of buying and watch films I have already seen, which is as close to resting as I ever get these days. Single and looking, quietly rather than loudly. Silver hair reads as cool and distant when the truth is mostly laziness at the hairdresser. Somewhere there is a photograph of me that explains all of this and it will never be shown to anybody.
