Arguing with myself about rest days is a weekly event and the rest days usually lose, which my elbows and my ego have opinions about. Teaching climbing means I spend hours reading other people's fear from six feet below, and I have got fairly good at knowing which kind it is. The gym closes and then the ramen starts, a route through the city I could walk with my eyes shut.

Photographs happen on the way, wet streets and signs and strangers who have no idea. Single, unbothered, busy. What makes me comfortable with somebody is watching them fail at something in front of me without turning it into a performance. Try the hard thing badly, laugh, go again. That is the entire test and most people never notice they are taking it.
