Sitting on the floor of an empty classroom with the marking done and my shoes off, which is the best twenty minutes of any working day. Teaching suits me because it is mostly patience, and I have more of that at work than I do anywhere else.

Weekends the boots come out and I walk until the town is a small thing below me. Clear nights I stop on the way down and look up for a while. The costumes are the part people are surprised by, three months of sewing for one afternoon of being someone else, and I take the stitching as seriously as the lesson plans. There is someone, and the shape of that changes month to month, so I have stopped describing it out loud. Goodbyes I keep short, always, because I have never found a long one that made anything easier.
