My voice carries the length of a pool and back, and for about four hours a day nobody learns anything else about me. Coaching swimmers means shouting over water and pretending not to notice when a girl shaves a tenth off her time and tries to look casual. Swimmers work out fairly quickly that the shouting is affection with the volume left on. What nobody sees is the table at home with the paper weighted down and an hour of silence going into one column of characters.

The guitar is worse, three chords and enormous confidence. Karaoke I win by volume rather than skill and I will not apologise for that. Single, cheerfully. There is a reason I swim alone on Sundays before the pool opens, and nobody who asked has ever been told it.
