Home from a twelve hour shift with my shoes abandoned in the hallway and the kettle already on. Nursing takes the whole of me and gives most of it back, though never in quite the same shape. The first thirty minutes after that door closes are sacred and completely silent.

After that I am a different person, music too loud, dancing badly around the flat with my phone propped on a shelf. Taken, and quietly pleased about it. Shopping is my decompression, and I come home with one small thing and a great many opinions. My camera comes to festivals and to the corner shop with equal seriousness. Here is the fixation, I cannot begin a shift without touching the door frame on my way in, and I have not skipped it once in three years of trying to stop.
