Putting an animal back into the arms of somebody who spent the whole night imagining the worst is the entire reason I do this job. The other half of it is the days I cannot fix the thing, and those follow me home and sit on the end of my bed. Nobody warns you how much of this work is looking after the humans in the room.

Gardening is my recovery, hands in the soil, nothing making a sound. Kendo twice a week gives me somewhere to put the rest of it, and the pool takes whatever is left over. One person still has a key to my flat and neither of us has asked for it back. Patience I hand out endlessly and to almost anybody. Trust takes a very long time, and I have yet to give it away early.
