An ink stone sits on the corner of the desk with practice sheets from yesterday stacked underneath, most of them wrong. Medicine takes the daylight and leaves very little room for anything slow, so calligraphy gets whatever remains of me. Swimming happens early, before the ward opens, when the pool belongs to about four people and nobody speaks.

Cheerful is not an act, though it is partly a tool, and it works on frightened patients better than any explanation ever does. The figures on my shelf get dusted more often than the rest of the flat. There is a complicated situation in the background that I would rather not open up tonight. What usually goes unsaid is how much I would like somebody still awake in the flat when a late shift finally ends.
