Nothing about my collection embarrasses me, which is how the shelf above my bed filled up. The boxes underneath it are worse, and I have started hiding them in the wardrobe like somebody with a genuine secret. Waiting tables suits me because I like feeding people, and I know every regular by the one thing they never order.

Kendo is the surprise, and the quiet ferocity of it is the only part of my personality that frightens anybody. Sundays are for the market and a pan that is far too big for one person. Cooking at home is cooking for one, which sits fine with me on the good days and less fine on the others. Single, and terrible at pretending I am not attached once I already am. What I notice first about a person is how they treat whoever is carrying the plates.
