What I do after dark, I do alone in water that is black and freezing, and I know exactly how that sounds. The water is completely mine for twenty minutes, and I have never told anyone at the lighthouse how far out I actually go. Sea glass is the daylight version of the same habit, hours of walking with my head down and a pocket that rattles by the end.
Sketching happens on the rocks with salt getting into everything, which the paper hates and I do not. Quiet is not shyness in my case, it is preference, and there is a difference. Company is welcome as long as it can sit still and say nothing. What I give away easily is what I find, glass, drawings, the good shells. What I never give away is the reason I swim so far out.
