Losing in front of an audience is my favourite part of the job, which nobody believes until they watch me do it. Something breaks open when it goes wrong live, and the run afterwards is always better than anything I manage alone in a quiet room. The part I hate is the waiting between matches, all that adrenaline and nowhere to put it.

Hiking fixes that, long stupid climbs with no phone signal, and the garden fixes whatever the hiking misses. Beans, chillies, and a spectacular annual failure at basil, all in pots on the back steps.
