Reading the final page of a book before the first is a habit I have given up trying to break. Nothing about it is defensible and I carry on doing it regardless. Studying takes the days, and the nights go to whoever is still awake and willing to talk about something that actually matters to them. Cooking with another person in the kitchen beats almost any evening I could plan, even when we spend most of it getting in each other's way.

Travel whenever the term breaks, and yoga most mornings to undo the damage the desk does. My situation is complicated, which I mention early rather than let it surface awkwardly later on. I relax around somebody the moment they admit to something small and unflattering about themselves, because until then I assume the performance is still running.
