A pressed leaf from a hike in spring is holding my place in a book I keep starting and never finishing. Keeping a house properly happens to be my work, and I am better at it than anybody expects, because order is genuinely calming. The days are long and mostly silent, which suits somebody who lives half an inch inside her own head.

Yoga at the end of it, on a mat by the window, until my shoulders forgive me. Kendo is the surprise, twice a week, all noise and shouting and the opposite of everything else in my life. Hills at the weekend whenever the weather agrees. My one law is that a thing gets finished, which is funny given the books. That rule is mine, though, and I would never hand it to anybody else.
