Grease under the nails is permanent now, and I keep forgetting that before I pick up a brush or a clean white shirt that is not mine. What I usually get wrong is time, I say an hour and mean three, especially when an engine starts making a noise I have never heard before. The workshop is where I think best. Kendo is where I stop thinking entirely, which is the whole point of it.

Painting happens late and badly and I like it anyway, mostly rooftops and the same corner of the yard in different weather. Cheerful is not a strategy with me, it is the setting I arrived in.
