Serious hands and a terrible sense of humour, and only one of those makes it into the room during a shift. Surgery demands a flat calm that costs more than most people realise, so the jokes arrive the second the doors close behind me. Baking is the decompression, precise in a way that feels familiar, weighing flour at midnight as though somebody were grading it.

Kendo keeps the shoulders honest and dancing keeps me from taking myself anywhere near as seriously as the job wants me to. Open, as in genuinely open, not as in careless with anybody who takes me seriously. My time, my food and my worst opinions are yours for the asking, immediately. The version of me that comes home after a bad case is not something I hand over quickly, if at all.
