Anything I promise about getting back to somebody within the week should be treated as a rough estimate at best. On the job I am precise to the minute, standing where I am meant to stand, reading a room before it happens, and then I go home and let every other obligation slide. Swimming empties me out, forty lengths and no thinking whatsoever, which is the closest thing to rest I get.

Painting is the embarrassing one, small canvases, nothing I would show, mostly water and mostly the same stretch of it. Books stack up faster than I read them and I decline to call that a problem, since the stack is at least honest about my intentions. Single, deliberately, at least for this year. Tonight will be a late supper, one chapter, and a canvas I ruin at roughly the point I should have stopped.
