Within reach of my left hand there is a practice blade, still damp from an hour I probably did not need, leaning where it should not. The training is the whole shape of my day, early and repetitive, and I would be unbearable without it. Books fill the gaps, mostly old ones and mostly borrowed, and I read slowly enough that a single volume can follow me around for a month.

Long rides on the coast road do what talking is supposed to do for other people. What I hand over easily is time, food, the last of anything.
