Promises I make late are worth roughly nothing, and everyone who knows me schedules around that. Behind the bar I am reliable to the second, which is the strange part, and off duty I am a man who forgets his own arrangements. Kendo three times a week stops the rest of my life sliding, and the tomatoes on my balcony are doing better than I deserve. Nobody warned me that a balcony crop would become the thing I check before I check my own face.

The best hour of my week is the one after closing, on the roof, working out which of those lights are planets. Nobody sees me out there talking to the plants as though they owe me an explanation. Single, and honest about enjoying it. Flirting is easy and costs nothing, staying is the interesting question.
