Onstage I read as somebody who has never doubted anything, and the truth is I count the steps under my breath the entire way through. Dancing pays the rent and settles my head, six hours on the good days and eight on the stupid ones, and my knees keep a record of it. Kendo was there before any of this and it still runs underneath everything, that habit of standing correctly before anything else happens.

Costumes are the part people find surprising, hours of glue and wire for one afternoon of being somebody else entirely. The ponytail stays because cutting it would feel like a decision, and I am bad at those. My annoying habit is drumming. Tabletops, doorframes, the back of a chair, usually while somebody is trying to tell me something important, and I do notice, eventually.
